Family resilience and good child outcomes: an overview of the research literature
Abstract
Reviews the international research literature on the processes that influence family resilience in coping with stress and adversity. They operate at family and wider family levels. Non-resident fathers and other father figures have an important role in promoting the development of children in lone-mother families while teenagers develop better in multi-generational co-residence. Positive parenting is a key factor on children's development. Notes the approaches that work best to build resilience in families: early intervention; being sensitive to families’ cultures and values; and assisting in families’ ecological stresses.
